Morro de São Paulo: seaside resort on the coast of Bahia

Morro de São Paulo with its snow-white beaches, the azure sea, and vibrant, exciting nightlife is a popular holiday destination among Brazilians and Argentinians.

During the Brazilian summer months, the island is bursting at the seams and vacant hotel rooms are scarce.

1. To do and see
A relaxed, casual atmosphere is prevalent during the day on the car free island and most tourists can be found on the beach.

2. Sleep
We stayed in Pousada Estevã for four days. The pousada is well located on the Rua Caminho da Praia, where you can find a lot of bars and restaurants.

3. Eat and drink
To enjoy a late lunch or an early caipirinha, you can visit one of the many restaurants and bars where it’s great to sit with your feet in the sand. Our favorite place is the Chez Max pizzeria named after the Argentinian owner, who was one of the first entrepreneurs on the island 25 years ago. The restaurant is part of his Chez Max bed and breakfast and is located at the front end of the third beach.

At the end of the day, the hip and trendy population of Brazil comes together to enjoy the stunning sunset in the beautifully located Toca do Morcego lounge bar.

At midnight, the bar transforms into a club with dancing going on until the break of dawn. The latter is also possible in the Pulsar Disco Club where old-fashioned foam parties are held regularly (see video).

4. Transport
Catamarans depart daily from the Salvador port that will take you to the island in approximately two and a half hours. It is recommended to buy a ticket as early as possible during the busy Brazilian summer months.

Make sure that you book a boat that sails directly to Morro de São Paulo. Tickets can be purchased in the departure hall located directly behind the well-known Mercado Modelo in Cidade Baixa.
